There are many different kinds of handicapped equipment for people who have disabilities. The disabled often require special products and accessories to help make their daily life easier. One of the best things about the equipment available these days is that it allows the handicapped to gain some independence which many desperately crave. Also the innovations in this area have resulted in better safety for disabled individuals. One of the biggest pieces of equipment one could purchase for the disabled could be a handicap-accessible vehicle.
Usually a handicap-accessible vehicle is going to be a van or minivan, because these autos have enough room for wheelchairs, walkers or some other large items of equipment. Also for those who are wheelchair bound are ramps and lifts. A van customized for those disabled should have a ramp that's easily raised and lowered, so those using a wheelchair can more easily and safely enter and exit the vehicle. These vans can be purchased new or used, or you can convert a van you already have to make it handicap-accessible. There are conversion kits available for different makes and models of van and minivan.
Another popular piece of equipment for the disabled is the wheelchair. There are two different types of wheelchairs the manual wheelchair and the electric wheelchair. A manual wheelchair is either pushed from behind while using the handles or moved by the person in the chair. Electric wheelchairs are designed with an electric motor and operate like vehicles. As you can imagine an electric wheelchair is usually a better choice for someone with a permanent disability or someone who is unable to make use of a manual chair. The manual wheelchair is ideal for those who are disabled for the short term due to surgery or injury.
There are various other types of handicapped equipment one can utilize. For example, you will find handicap accessible bathrooms. These bathrooms contain larger stalls and toilets which have grab bars on either side for safety and ease of motion. For the bath and shower there are special doors, seats and bars to help make things safer and more convenient. Ramps are another type of equipment, that are now mandatory for any new public structure. And don't forget service animals. The blind often have seeing eye dogs to guide them, and some in wheelchairs have helper monkeys. While animals aren't pieces of equipment, they usually are very helpful to the handicapped.
