What You Should Know About Handicapped Parking
These days it is possible for the disabled to do many things, including travel and shop. At every type of facility you can find handicapped parking spaces. These spaces are typically painted blue and have the universal wheelchair symbol for handicapped painted in white. There may also be standing handicap parking signs in front of the spaces. These signs will also be blue with white graphics and lettering. They're impossible to miss as handicapped spaces. This makes parking handicapped much easier because there are spaces available close to the building.
For you to park in one of these spaces, you must have a handicapped sticker on your car. These are generally hang tags which are normally placed on your rear view mirror. There are temporary ones which may be orange, for people who are awaiting the permanent tags, or for individuals who are only temporarily disabled. The regular disabled parking tag is blue and easily noticeable by parking attendants or parking authorities. Some parking spaces are double the usual width to accommodate large vehicles for those who are disabled.
The issue is that some people think it's acceptable to park inside a handicap space despite the fact that they're not handicapped. They often think, I'm only going inside for just a second. But that's as long as it takes for someone to determine that there is not a handicap tag in or on the car. This is a serious offense to park in a handicap space when you're not disabled that carries a large fine and/or time spent in jail. Additionally it is very disrespectful to disabled people whether or not they need to park in the space at that time. If you can walk, you should be happy to stroll the distance from a regular parking spot to your destination.
The DMV, or Department of Motor Vehicles, is most likely the authority who issues the disabled tags, stickers and placards necessary for handicapped parking. When you're not disabled or don't currently possess a tag, never park in a handicap space. This is a crime, and most people don't want to break the law just so they don't have to walk as far. Parking spaces for the handicapped are very useful for individuals who do have disabilities which include limited mobility as a result of injury or disease, and they have every right to use these spaces.
